Bahuda Ratha Yatra in Puri Jagannath Dham Temple |

BAHUDA YATRA :

Bahuda Yatra, also known as the Return Journey, is an integral part of the Rath Yatra festival celebrated in Jagannath Dham Puri and in Jagannath temples worldwide. It represents the reverse process of the Rath Yatra. During the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, embark on a procession to the Gundicha Temple, which is considered their aunt's house. They stay there for a few days or a week.

In the Bahuda Yatra, the deities make their return journey to their home, the Shree Mandir (Jagannath Temple). This event is widely recognized and attracts a large number of tourists and devotees from all over the world. Since the return journey of Lord Jagannath follows the same protocol and schedule as the Rath Yatra, visitors who come from distant places often choose to stay in Puri for 10 days to participate in the Bahuda Yatra.

The Rath Yatra and Bahuda Yatra hold immense significance in the Jagannath tradition, and their celebrations are eagerly awaited by devotees who come to witness these grand processions and seek blessings from Lord Jagannath.

OVERVIEW OF BAHUDA YATRA

After spending some time at the Gundicha Temple, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra begin their journey back to the Shree Mandir. On the day of their return, the three deities are offered a special sweet called "Poda Pitha." This sweet is made of rice, coconut, lentils, and jaggery. After partaking in this offering, the deities commence their journey.

As they approach closer to the Shree Mandir, the chariots of Balabhadra and Subhadra move ahead and are parked at the Singha Dwara, also known as the Lion's Gate. However, Lord Jagannath's chariot halts in front of the palace of the Gajapati King. This pause signifies the special bond between Lord Jagannath and the Gajapati King, who is considered the first servant of Lord Jagannath.

Meanwhile, Goddess Lakshmi, the wife of Lord Jagannath, steals a glimpse of the deities' return from the Chaha Ni Mandapa, praying for their safe journey. In a gesture of love, Lord Jagannath offers a garland to Goddess Lakshmi as a symbol of their affection.

These rituals and moments hold deep spiritual and cultural significance, adding to the divine aura and devotion surrounding the Bahuda Yatra and the return of Lord Jagannath to his abode, the Shree Mandir.
