How you can register an E-FIR for stolen/lost vehicle in bangalore !!

Citizens in Karnataka have to no longer run from one Police station to another to get a complaint registered for stolen/lost vehicles thanks to the online FIR or E-FIR registration.

The electronic FIR service was first introduced by the Karnataka Police on a pilot basis in September 2022 end.

By October-end, nearly 550 people registered E-FIRs about vehicle thefts in the state. According to the police, a total of 6,000 to 7,000 MV (MotorVehicle) theft cases are registered in Karnataka every year.

How to register online FIR ?

- Open the Karnataka state police website (www.ksp.karnataka.gov.in) and click on 'Citizen Centric       Portal" under the Citizen's Desk section on the left sideof the home page.

- Create an account with a username and password.

- Click 'E FIR registration (vehicle thefts).

- Registration of new FIR' page opens. Fill personal details of the vehicle owner (same as in the     Aadhaar card)

- Open 'Occurrence detail' and fill in the details of where, when, and how the vehicle was stolen.

- Open the 'Particulars of property' page and enter vehicle details (similar to that entered in the Vahan   database).

- Authenticate the complaint copy by entering your Aadhaar number.

- Enter One Time Password (OTP) which will be received on your registered mobile number along with  Aadhar.

- The details of the complaint will then be sent to the police station concerned. Once the police station   completes the FIR by authenticating it, a copy of the FIR is sent to the local court and the complainant   receives a text message.

- The text message will have a secret code number and using the same, one can download the FIR by   visiting Citizen Centric Portal.

In the E-FIR process, once the complaint is registered, it will automatically be forwarded to the jurisdictional police station. Police then investigate the case and information is shared with the complainant if they succeed in finding the stolen vehicle.

The name of the concerned police station is automatically reflected on the digital platform after the complainant gives the location of the theft in his complaint. Similarly, the details of the lost vehicle will also be authenticated from its registration number, with the integration of Vahan, a Central government registry of motor vehicles.

The digital service has been integrated into the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems model of the police.

Moreover, as the next step the Police have proposed to add an 'undetected' or closure ('C') report, which will be made available online to people whose vehicles have not been detected, on the 91st day from the date of registration of the FIR.

Under the CrPC, police are given 90 days to investigate and charge sheet a case from the date of registration of the FIR.
